This quilt was inspired by the front fabric, upcycled from an ikea duvet cover which I used for years in its original form before taking apart and dyeing. Though I washed the duvet cover regularly, when I dyed it I found that there had been stains I was not aware of that had reacted to the dye and were more visible than before. I felt intense shame discovering this, linked to ideas about cleanliness and my skill as a dyer, and led me to thinking more and more about what we hide out of shame. I was working on this quilt, feeling and thinking about shame and history, as the Israeli genocide of Palestinians intensified in 2023. As I worked I was thinking of the history of the US, our covert and propagandized relationship with Israel, and all the terrible deeds we try to cover up. So the front of the quilt features small silk patches inadequately covering the stains that remain there, to remind that attempting to hide things leaves them there to fester. The back of the quilt features upcycled cotton pieced irregularly, with more silk patches made from silk organza and the scraps of silk left over from the front, as well as the title of the quilt embroidered in cotton thread the same color as the backing fabric. The batting is cotton and the binding was hand finished on the back of the quilt. This quilt measures 58" x 67".
